SWEAT Workshop
The Summer Workshop for Experimentation and Thought is a graphic design workshop designed to give participants the opportunity to collaborate, create compelling, poignant work, and engage in some summer fun. And, as with all hard work, a little SWEAT is required. During the summer workshop, participants are introduced to an overall design objective where creative collaboration determines how the project will be completed. Workshop outcomes typically include two formal outputs of design making, from books, videos, murals to exhibitions. The best part about partaking in the SWEAT Workshops is there is no necessity for a finished project- simply experimenting and curiosity is enough.
July 2015 | Stolen Hue
Prompt: How does light influence your graphic expression?
My first thoughts of light were that of sight. Through many hours of thought, research, and experimentation I finally had a process. Staring into my phone’s flash light for increments of 3, 5 and 10 seconds, I then saw that familiar dancing white spot- we’ll call it a blurb. I followed the path of the blurb to record the patterns I was seeing. Compiled into compositions of layering and playing, the results are as you see them.
July 2016 | Experimentation Through Movement
Prompt: How to work and turn
The majority of my focus for this prompt was focused on the movement around me. I started by exploring movements in nature around me where I studied the movements of bees and their dance for making honey. I then turned my observations to people dancing, where my instructor’s 6 year old took the spotlight. Just as I had traced the dance of the bees, I traced the footwork of her dance steps.
The second part of the prompt was collaborative with the other SWEATers, working with opposite ideologies of the prompt. The final output ended with a curated alphabet based on movement, as well as four posters based on the collaborative efforts of the SWEATers.
